I'm going out to Belgium for a few months to work, and one of the people in the team who works for Softimage has been raving about XSI to the Boss. The Boss is now bending my ear to learn XSI because he is under the impression that you can make HL2 maps entirely in the XSI mod tool. As far as I know, you still have to use Hammer and compile your maps like you would with Q3. You cannot make maps entirely in XSI can you?

Blitz@Posted: Thu Feb 09, 2006 2:41 am :
Yeah you have to bring it into Hammer no matter what.

I know softimage are adding alot of new features to XSI, but I'm not "migrating" from Maya unless I have too - like if Autodesk kills it off.

Been doing some research on this subject and came up with this:

http://softimage.wiki.avid.com/index.ph ... st_(XSISDK)

http://www.softimage.com/downloadsrv/pr ... SI_5.0.wmv

I would like to know if anyone has been able to do this with HL2 and what they can do in XSI?

what's stopping you from making a level in Maya & putting it in Doom 3? At long as things are broken up it shouldn't be a problem for the render.

Absolutely nothing:

XSI seems to be implying that you can dramaticaly improve yor work flow with this new adaptation. That is the potential payoff. What I want to hear is some independant feedback.

ok. :) I don't know from a personal stand point (I don't use XSI & the mod edition doesn't support D3 models) but from the standpoint of someone who's been dealing with company marketing for the production enviroment for a few years, a lot fo the time something that will "dramaticly improve" something is specificly for them... IE catching up to the competition (example: adobe is now boasting 3d accelerator support that willspeed things up... but only compared to the previous versions of premiere. It's still slower then some other apps, and in some cases, MUCH slower then no acceleration).

if Softimage is really pushing this for you convince your boss to convince them to give you a free copy for X amount of days. Then you can compare it side by side with maya & Hammer itself. I bet they'll do it... :)

So you make HL2 maps for work? Do you work at Valve?

I'm working for a group called Workspace Unlimited. We have developed a moddified version of Quake3 that does some funky things, but we are always looking to the future. Part of my job is to be aware of new developements and potential ways of working so I can offer an opinion on that direction.
