For a basic test cube for a mod im making it says use 1m*1m*1m but when I render the box in modelviewer its massive. So i checked out Customise->Unit setup...->System Unit Setup

1 Unit = ????

How do i set this up for the Doom3 engine??

The Happy Friar@Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 5:54 pm :
i've always found it easier to load up an existing asset & use that for scale.

otester@Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 5:56 pm :
How? Where?

iceheart@Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 6:45 pm :
1 unit in max, whichever unit it's set to, will become 1 unit in D3. I set max to use generic, unnamed units to eliminate all confusion.

otester@Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 7:39 pm :
Well everythings done in metres so with generic enabled, 1 Unit = 1 Doom3 Metre ?? because its all done in metres or??

otester@Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 8:07 pm :
Ok seems it does after a load of experiments.

Can i scale my models down ?

iceheart@Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 2:27 am :
The only unit that exist in D3 is the generic "unit", and 1 of whatever unit your modelling app is set to as default will become 1 unit in D3, simple as that.

otester@Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 11:09 am :
Yeah ok but can I scale my models down?

For example: model is 500 generic unit = 500 D3 Units, which is way too big, needs to be half a of D3 unit in length, how can do this? can i?

Rayne@Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 12:16 pm :
What your point should be? If 500 is too much then make your model 250 units big

EDIT: you must scale the model, not change the way Doom unit system works...

otester@Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 12:18 pm :
Damn i hate scaling lol.

Just wondering if you could make xxx max units = 1 D3 Unit

iceheart@Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 5:54 pm :
Maybe, but it's probably going to be a lot harder than just selecting everything and scaling it down?

Here is a .obj file that you can import into your scene. It is the same size as Doom3's "Zombie Fatty" model as well as Quake4's "Strogg Tactical" model. It'll give you a sense of how you should scale your models in 3dsmax.

http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=143475

that download link will work for 30 days maximum.

I'm sure you can set custom grid sizes in max.
