I haven't really had any real experience doing 3d modeling apart from animating some stock game assets and making some terrain for my released maps. So a few weeks ago I decided to hunker down and try and learn some more about it. About 2 weeks ago I decided to start a project and see it through to completion. As a huge star wars fan I decided to try and do my favorite ship, the imperial shuttle. I know it's not the most original thing but it seemed relatively simple enough and it seemed like a place to start.

Here's what I've come up with:

There is a few more in this dir: http://-efx-.shackspace.com/3d/imperial%20shuttle

I guess my next step would be to texture it.

Anyway, thank you for taking a peek.

looks nice, great start!

Now, make an imperial hangar map for doom 3 and put it in there :)

rich_is_bored@Posted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 5:11 am :
That's pretty damn nice given your limited experience.

What package are you using?

efx@Posted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 5:13 am :
Oh, I should have mentioned that I use Max for my modeling needs.

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming please!

The only place to start with modelling is to model something Star Wars, it's a rule, it's in a rule book.. I know.. I saw it.. hahaa.

Nice model!

Is this modeled from a reference or just from still pictures from the movies?

rich_is_bored@Posted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:51 am :
It's so easy to find reference material for anything Star Wars. I'm sure he scored himself a set of blueprints or at least reference images.

The blueprints and data sheets on various fan sites are so concise you'd be inclined to think they were real ships if you didn't know any better.

For instance...

Rich is indeed right, the pic he linked is one of the ones used. There's a bunch of good ones on the old "Behind the Magic!" cd-rom my wife owns from like 1998 or something around then. Great source of reference.

Thanks again guys for the nice comments, I'll try and get some wireframes up later tonight.

very cool model, and I agree a good choice of subjects to start off with.

do you intend to model a scene to put the ship in so you can render some stills or even a movie clip? I know its a lot more work, especially with lighting a scene so I wouldn't blame you if you just wanted to get the ship on its own finished.

Thank you. For now, I'm going to work on unwrapping it and applying some basic texturing. But beyond that I just wanted to see if I could do some hi poly stuff.

Cool!.. nice model, great choice of model.. :)

Thank you. For now, I'm going to work on unwrapping it and applying some basic texturing. But beyond that I just wanted to see if I could do some hi poly stuff.

Cool!.. nice model, great choice of model.. :)

The only place to start with modelling is to model something Star Wars, it's a rule, it's in a rule book.. I know.. I saw it.. hahaa.

Kamikazee@Posted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:22 am :
