With the deadline having been reached, all of the entries for the Quake 4 Community Map Pak have been submitted. We have compiled the 34 maps into one pak for play testing prior to the upcoming voting process. Thanks to all of the contestants for their submissions and good luck!

DOWNLOAD (87mb)

Extract the .zip into your Quake 4 folder.

Great, 34 maps!

Awsome!

If anyone downloaded the pak within the first hour of it being available (there were only 17 downloads at the time), you may need to redownload the pak. The zip file should be 86.2mb (not 87mb).

Morte@Posted: Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:34 am :
mine reads 86.2
everything seems fine

Bittoman@Posted: Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:34 am :
There are some seriously sweet maps in there.

SyncError, was Repent actually your map? I only ask because I ran across a statement at here and because when I took a preliminary look at the entries last night it stood out like a sore thumb for pro-quality. Either way and whoever made it, that's one sweet looking map.

Oh yeah, I meant to add the easter egg "face" made out of geometry and the one damaged part of the map was was a neat trick

SyncError@Posted: Sat Feb 03, 2007 1:30 am :
Yes Repent is my map. Its not up for vote as I didn't want to give the impression that it could even potentially knock another map out of the contest... I just threw it in because I made it under the same guidelines. I started the map 2 weeks after I announced the contest, used base textures and finished it before the deadline.

I had fun making it, I hope you enjoy it. =)

well you shouldn't have said that now should you? ;)

you know theres gonna be people inspecting your map for any errors, and to tell the truth, i found this bugger before I knew this was your map ;)

anyways here goes with the shots, sorry about the filenames but it was just TOO easy ;)

i dont know if theres more then these, i just saw these when i took a 2 minute spin around each map to see the competition for my map :)

otherwise nice map, tho i dont dig the performance, its pretty bad on my own with just a single geforce 6600gt turned on(i got sli, its great for testing performance to see how your map runs with slower machines :) )

There are lots of errors with the map, and if I was an actual competitor in the contest I would and could have spent more time on it to correct them before the deadline. I made the map cause I enjoy mapping...

im just messing with you man ;)

its just fun to see pro's make "mistakes" too, everyone just human huh. I loved doom 3/quake 4 to just play to find mistakes and stuff like that ;)

im gonna put stuff like this on my upcoming website where i try to explain and help prevent stuff like this, but more about that later :)

Bolleh: It's easy to look for a mistake in a level, but it's hard to create the level itself. In other words, nitpicking the level won't give you much credability. Sync has a fulltime job, side projects and kids to take care of. I'm not just speaking for Sync, but for Quaker-X as well. Some players said that his map wasn't good, yet his level in my opinion and opinion of some of pro LDs is that it's a damn good level (much better than majority of levels in the CMP zip). You'll be shocked to learn how many days it took to produce such a quality with him being busy working on a new Human Heads' game in production.

oh dont get me wrong, im not saying its bad or anything. or i dont make the mistakes but im just doing stuff like that to improve my own knowledge of mapping and help me remind of certain things, sometimes you see stuff in a map that makes you think "why not use it some other way"

and then actually use it as inspiration for your own work. not only that, i have looked at other people's maps ever since i started mapping. its an easy and fast way too learn, i look at what others have done, both pro and new mappers and try to learn something from it.

if i can pass some of this knowledge on to other people, and perhaps make others think about maps more, who knows what progress they could make, or even i by just looking at these maps, including my own.

i think its a very interesting topic in improving skills, its not just about simply laying some brushes(even though im sure we've all done it alot and enjoyed it :D ) but also thinking more about the how and what to improve and perfect :)

i cant wait for a new generation of gaming on the doom 3 platform, the details the maps these days are astounding, looking back sometimes can be very usefull i think :)

so yes, its easy to look for a mistake in a level, but its harder to actually learn something from it :)

Method@Posted: Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:53 am :
Another thing you need to consider is time, in other words deadlines. People who work in the industry don't have time to "perfect" the map if there is such a thing. Missing a deadline, means slowing down the project, which will trigger publisher being irritated and stop paying you. Thus adding more work, which may lead to not being able complete it on time and being fired. In the worst case of course.

If you have some time on your hand, set yourself a deadline, say 2 months for a MP level. Build it and post it here, then see how many "mistakes" people will find.

Although looking at professional maps definitely helps and improves your skill.

ya know... when *I* was a kid (snicker) we didn't care about errors in the maps. We just played & played & played & played till we fell asleep. And errors were called "features" too. :D

bolleh@Posted: Mon Feb 05, 2007 1:53 pm :
again, im not saying i dont make mistakes. and i know deadlines too, i wished i had more time for the CMP too because in the end the deadline just seemed to come out of nowhere and there i was on the last day fixing things ;)

anyways again im not trying to mock someone or whatever, im just looking for means to develop my own skill and perhaps help others improve theirs.

it was just a coincidence i saw a small error in syncerror's map :)

i dont care about the errors, syncerror said he made the map 2 weeks after the CMP started, im just interested to know if he made it during work hours or just in free time. because it is a pretty tough map to make in such a small amount of time tho i have to say i was most impressed by another map, but i will save that for the voting :)

running around every map in the CMP has given me enough ideas to get going on my next map :)

I made it on my own free time at home.
