Just something i made couse i had a few hours of free time so there is very little detail. This simply a short map with the same layout and enemy's as map 07 of doom2.

Why bother making dead simple for Doom 3? Honestly it was a shit map for Doom 2. And if you only took what, 2-3hrs to make it, is there any point in trying this map?

No screenies either.

Skul@Posted: Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:43 am :
Okay, it was similar to the original, except for the gameplay. It didn't feel the same. Not to mention that the six or so Mancubi walking around made it seem like I was in an earthquake and made me feel a tiny bit sick.

There's also the problem of being able to exit straight away. It's been a while since I played DOOM 2, but I'm sure you couldn't hit the exit switch nearly straight away.

The DOOM 3 theme got tiring, too. I like the piece, but hearing it over and over was a little annoying.

To be honest, if a DOOM 3 map takes you a couple of hours, don't release it at all (unless it's for some ultra-super-mega speed mapping contest, or something). Even a week on a map isn't enough.

Nice attempt, but not really something people will want to keep on their drive. Once you've got the basics of the editor down, it's easy to throw together any old level, but making something people actually want to play is hard. And no screens in your post don't help. You've got them in the .zip file, yes, but I don't want to download a file to see a map's screens.

Don't let my post discourage you. This was just a bad choice for a map, that's all. :)

I'd disagree. Everybody I've ever talked to has said it was one of the most fun SP and MP maps ever made by id. Everybody I played with WANTED remakes for Quake 1, 2 & 3.

I'd say the only reason it would suck for D3 is because, frankly, Doom 3 is NOTHING like Doom 1/2 except in names only & you can't get the same pace, gameplay, feeling.

I just asked around and people laughed at the idea of a mp map of dead simple for any of the quake games. I prefer more complicated maps where you can use the map against your opponent, but I guess people like simple maps for mp like some of the ones in Q3.

Depends on your taste in maps I guess.

who are you asking? I've talked with lots of player during the Q1/2 erra (and who played durring then) who loved dead simple remakes. They don't need to be simple either. Several maps had new hidden areas, underground ducts where you could pop out in different places, some where small & fast, some were larger...

I'd imagine ANY game dev today would say a "dead simple" style map is the kiss of death just like you said, due to it's simplicity. But dev's have also said that unless you have great graphics nobody will even look at the game, yet there Wii is with a graphics engine from 2000-2003 & people buy that like crack & the top selling games have graphics that look no better then a cheap made indy PC game.

I wouldn't even say people want a more complex map, that want a map they can beat someone else in & not be frustrated. Notice how many people play Quake games now a days... I'd say that perhaps it's time to go back to a more simple design, complex isn't drawing anyone in except highly competative players & those aren't the ones who fun the dev companies & thus don't get new games made.

Actually. Shaviro did the first hallway of "The Focus" once, when Doom3 was first released.
We were originally plan ning to have it featured in Phobos. But that was quite some time ago. ;)

ok, my critique:

*need more space. The Doom guy had space to get around, would NEVER get stuck ANYWHERE. This is in the center room with the mancubus & outside. I got pinned between two pinky's. :(

*make it so you know where the "doors" to the outside are & lower all four.

*make it so when you kill the last mancubus the doors lower. Can be done via scripting.

*remove the imps/pinkies. They don't work well. Instead use "monster_zombie_commando_cgun" & use the key/value "def_projectile/projectile_plasmablast". Makes them fire plasma bolts, just like the spiders from Doom 3! :D

*put powerups/weapons on the platforms with the mancubi. . Put a monster_clip around their platforms. When you activiate the corresponding GUI the platform lowers & the monster_clip's are removed so he can walk around to get you, but you can then get the pickup.

*remember, no jump in original doom 2 so you'll need somethings to be higher then normal. :)

*play the original.

I played "dead simple" lots of times in quake2 with the rail arena mod and it was fun for sure but yes its very simple :-)

And btw Doom3 allready has that simple map packed with Doom3 SP-Mod "In Hell". Here are two shots:

I'm thinking with adding a bit more details hc_gamer your map should be good enough to give it a chance but currently i prefer Doomi's Version.
