Thought this thread might make an interesting read after some posts.

For me, I'd like to see a complete mod based on the doom novels (Look in my sig). If you have read them, you'd know how great it would be. Would be alot of work though, and would need models of a female marine (Arlene Sanders) and probably a new model for the doom marine (Flynn Taggart). (Wonder what "Clyde" would look like?)

Hell, once I learn how to make cut scenes and import models (If I still have enough interest in the game by then) I might attempt a map or two from the books.

So, what would you like to see in a mod?

Speaking from experience, you've gotta have way more interest than that.

The ending of doom64 failed though, it made it so no other doom game (Following that story line) could ever be made.

Also, everyone knows about goldeneye... but so few people know about Perfect Dark. I downloaded it awhile back and it is like goldeneye but better in about every way. Look it up...

I'd like to see something akin to Classic Doom's megawads. Just 20 or so new levels tied together with a story, they would'nt have to have new weapons or monsters, just some good well thought interesting levels. I've given a lot of thought also to something where you play as Crash, I'd really like to see something on an Antarctic UAC base, ice and snow, and desolation.

An RTCW mod would be cool, just one or two good Wolf levels done right. I still wish H.O.E mod would have been done, they had some sweet looking monsters and weapons made, I just wish that would have happened, I was literally crushed when that mod threw in the towel.

I dunno, they could always make one where the Doomguy changes his mind and you haveta fight your way out lol. Although even if they made everything else identical, if you knew that was the story it'd have a totally different feel to it. Seriously, on the other hand, you can always make alternative games, ie D3 which tell a different story, pretending the original didn't happen. Or filler, like a game based on how the D64 Doomguy stops a resurrection in Hell or something. I just did these off the top of my head, I'm sure if you thought about it you could come up with good storylines that follow D64.

On topic, if you wanted to make em, I don't think you'd need to change the male model. Why can't the D3 Doomguy be Fly? No reason really. And if you think the novels are that good even though they're out in left field for doom, why don't u just make the chaingun commando the Clyde? It's about as close to the original chaingunner as the books are to the original doom.
Off topic, while I think they might make interesting levels, the novels weren't that "great". They completely altered the story. Just cause the guys who wrote em included some of the original levels almost word for word, ie E1M8, doesn't make them a great adaptation. On top of that if you read really well, there's little inferences that make Taggart seem like a pussy. If you read even better, you can tell they were written by foreigners. I think somebody should write a real Doom novel. But that's just my opinion. Please don't go off into a 9 page tirade if I insulted your favorite books ever written or something.
I would simply like to see the original Doom games drawn up on the new engine, with that being the ONLY change. Same weapons, monsters, everything. No jumping etc.

rich_is_bored@Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:44 am :
So would I but I don't think it's a goal that's easily attainable anymore.

The quality bar has gone up exponentially in recent years. So much so that teamwork is practically mandatory given the workload involved in content creation. And when your working with a concept that's already familiar to people, there's going to be a pre-existing fan base to draw talent from. You just do a bit of promotion along the lines of "Hey I'm making a mod based on X" and you're likely to garner enough interest to make a project possible.

But when you're trying to create something completely new, it's a much harder sell. There's no basis for comparison. So you present a story, concept art or whatever, but it doesn't really amount to much. For a truly original idea you need to bend over backwards to sell it. And now days that pretty much means doing everything by yourself until you have something tangible you can demo around.

And for the novice that's a massive undertaking. If you don't know how to code, model, texture, map, ect... you have to invest time into learning those skills. And while you don't necessarily have to master anything you could easily end up spending years bettering yourself without anything to show for it (this is me to a "T").

That's pretty hard to accept. Especially if your just some kid who's aspires to make a game but you never really thought about all that goes into it. I figure most people realize how steep a learning curve they're facing, and they either give up on their original vision in favor of something that's an easier sell or they just don't bother.

All successful mods I've participated in have been original licenses but based on something familiar. They Hunger was that kind of project, although very well established once I joined the flag, it started out being something people could relate too; zombies. Another mod I've been involved with was Urban Terror, also based on something you could easily sell as "counter-strike with the touch of quake" -- I WAS SOLD.

I guess you can see what I mean :)

Actually the dark mod is exactly my point - I was hooked once I saw the reference to Thief. Very nicely done and I can see why someone would do this to Doom 3, so cudos to you Sparhawk.

I'm not against people doing Hexen mods and whatnot, but once in awhile something should come along that makes me go "this person had a unique vision and even through the limitations of mod-making, he managed to create something freaking awesome".

Yes, Urban Terror was. I thought it had a very different feeling to it and wasn't very similar to counter strike. The basic idea may have been taken from CS, but they made it their own in the end.
