I remember back in the days, my old cousin trying to explain to a 12 years kid the english rules of 3 big D&D books... i played 2 or 3 afternoons, but never understood... lol.

didn't he sell d&d for a song before it became really popular?

fabian@Posted: Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:05 am :
how do you sell a game concept as a song?

Sad news, the guy's had a huge impact on gaming, even if you're not a big RPG fan like me you can't deny that even some of the FPS games that we love have adopted many RPG elements whose concept can be traced back to the original pen and paper game he created. His legacy lives on and will for many years possibly centuries even.

"sold it for a song" means he sold it for very little money.

A random scraping of google image's brings up some interesting stuff, like original small-run printed rulebooks before the mass market books even. Looks like he led a pretty full life.

I know I that I revered the name Gary Gygax when I was 12-13.

The World of Warcraft 2.4.0 week update is dedicated to him by Blizzard.
They talk in the patch description (in the wowtracker, so i can't copy/past) about the awesome inspiration G.G. was for them.

I think the whole heroic fantasy world inspired from the original D&D aswell as from LOTR for exemple.
