He's probably talking about some stupid contradiction in the name.

E.g.:

"RTCW2 doesn't exist because technically there was already second game that other time before, not to mention that other game that was released on that other thingy, so this game is TECHNICALLY R-R-RTCW4, and should not be considered a true part of the series because of these other obnoxious reasons."

Sorry I had to make a rant about people who go nuts over game titles. (Which kat did not, I was the one that went nuts... :D)

Anyway, I don't know much about RTCW, but from what I've heard, there is another one in the making. I suspect if that's true they would probably release more info at QuakeCon. Not to mention more Rage info. At QuakeCon '07 they said that more info would trickle in about Rage in the following months, but I don't think it did.

Even so, I'll be looking forward to the four day long party with all kinds of free stuff. Every year since '06 I prayed that I would get called up for a Quake 4 Quick Draw tourney (I'm pretty good at Q4), but I never get raffled. It sucks because most people that get called for the Q4 Quick Draw have NEVER played Quake, so they suck bad. You basically get 1 thousand dollars for going up and pwning some n00b who never played the game. And at the final party you can risk your 1 grand for 2 grand by playing another match, and I would totally do that. (Why not go all out?)

QuakeCon is like a four day party. Regardless of the announcements made, you're going to have a good time.

It's always in August. I don't know why they signed for July 31st this year (it's July 31st - August 3rd), probably something they had to do because of certain scheduling at the Hilton, and this was the closest time they could get.

It's still in August though... The bulk of it anyway. :D

I'd like to see anything new at all from id Software (& co.) including anything in the works for handhelds/mobiles or whatever, I really hope there's some visual news on both Rage and RtCW2, which it may as well be called anyway. It's kinda silly to say it doesn't exist when there's a whole forum here dedicated to it. :P

You know what I'd really love? I'm gonna tell you anyways! I'd love it if they were to announce at least hints on the editing of the newer games. Are the new titles going to use roughly the same assets as the previous tech-4 titles? What about map editing? Just anything to indicate that it may just be possible to begin working on Rage assets now, as it might just use the same old normalmaps and meshes that Doom3 does, you know what I mean? I don't see the big deal in announcing such things for the sake of the modding community that may want to get straight to work on things now, whatever the consequences.
For example, if I knew I could make some Quake 3 Arena map that would be "portable" to Doom3 I may have been inclined to start on a singleplayer map in the post-Q3A lull. Maybe there's a bunch of reasons why it just doesn't work this way and why they wouldn't announce such technical details about their unreleased games, but it'd be nice to feel more confident about it rather than waiting for the moment it's released just to find out it's a revamped version of the Doom3 engine all over again.

Meh, anything could happen. Quake Live beta may launch at QuakeCon (if not sooner), for the LAN. If not for the testing of LAN features, then for the LAN and the fans at least. They did it with QW beta last year (it was the beta 2 I think).

I think RTCW2 - or 3, or Wolf2 or 3, or whatever - could quite possibly been shown. It's just been so long since we've seen anything, years. You'd figure they would have a lot done by now. I wouldn't doubt that they idea hopped in the middle of development, but I really don't think they're still in the concepting stages today.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but when the questioner asked Carmack about the "cleaning up" (ie no blood and gore) of Quake 3 for Quake Live, Carmack didn't go into detail about the maps themselves. Personally, I have to problem with taking the blood and gore and gibs out of the actual action in Quake live (which was confirmed) especially if the spark effect looks cool, but I would have a problem with them editing the art in the levels and such. Can anybody who's in the beta right now confirm if the pentagrams, skulls etc. have been taken out of maps like Q3Dm7 or not?

I think Carmack's comments around 1:46 in really put the heated debate on this forum into perspective.

The Happy Friar@Posted: Fri Aug 08, 2008 6:29 pm :
to me, one of the best things of playing quake 1, 2 & 3 was watching people explode when you hit them with a rocket. It's part of the "awesomeness" factor. Like the baddies vaporizing in the last two Zelda games.

<h`FishStix> so ET.TV wasn't able to get internet in the room of the conferance, there was no way. Sorry for the inconvenienve :|

And this:

Quote:
They're having the same issues as everyone else, including us at TGN. QuakeCon event coordinators screwed the pooch when it came to having substantial access to the Internet. Their setup is great for LAN, but from what I've heard there's basically zero chance of getting a good speed from the event itself.

I know that TGN is recording footage of various events and will try and upload the footage later after departing for the hotel room or elsewhere.

So yeah, forget it.

Love this entry

6:38pm - Doom IV time! Says the world official announcement for the next Doom game is right here, right now! Doom logo on screen. Room is full of yelling. No details, "but there will be blood." Also guns. Someone yells flashlights and laughter ensues. Says there will be demons. As well as gibs. "It's going to be kick ass!"

HELL YEAH!!

Only Quake this year: Quake Live.
Makes sense to me after Q4 & ET:QW + Rage announcement. Now we'll have to wait for any D4 shot... Too early at the moment I suppose.

About the Quake Zero, yeah, the name is cool, but I find Quake Live to fit better to what they did (Quake Zero being a probable mean to make a new big production & relates what happened before, etc...)

TelMarine@Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:54 am :
a little bit more elaboration from shacknews:
Quote:
A new full-featured Quake Arena title will probably not be developed if Quake Live is not successful, according to comments made by id Software's John Carmack today.

"The door is not completely shut for another Quake project, and I'd say probably the success of Quake Live is going to determine whether or not we do another Quake Arena project," said Carmack.

"But right now the publishers aren't all that interested in a multiplayer project on there."

john_doe2@Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:58 am :
Doesn't look like will see anything tangible out of Doom 4 right now. Here's a quote from Eurogamer:

Earlier we asked Rage project lead Tim Willits about Doom 4, which is being headed up by a team run by Kevin Cloud. "I think during the conference when Todd talks about it, he's just going to have the Doom logo up," he said. So it proved. So there's nothing tangible to see, we asked? "No, no. It's way early."

Oh well. It's what I expected. I hope they'll show something soon though!

Another entry that I just love!

7:38pm - Now he's talking about Doom. Says they get a lot of resumes from very smart people who want to build new systems like AI, but they don't need them right now because they haven't come close to expoiting the technology they have now. But the gist of Doom is that they're going to have a lot more creative freedom on Doom, because the technology will not be much of a limit.

AH!.........faints from too much happiness

After reading both of those, I recommend the maximumpc one, it has way more info and is better written. The ign one was apparently written by some incompetent kid who didn't manage to concentrate past the first 20 minutes. Are you serious?!?

No way Wolf use id tech 5! You clearly see that Wolf have some huge polygons limitations on characters, and FX/particles... no motion blur, or any advanced post processes effects...

It must be the death of Raven if they made this result (Wolf) with a so more powerfull technology.

Ww3@Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:01 pm :
The new Wolf runs on the Q3 engine right? I wonder if Raven uses their own enhanced version from SoF2 or if they've made improvements, it's so hard to tell..

Zenix@Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:30 pm :
What? What is going on here? Wolfenstein runs on id Tech 4, Rage runs on id Tech 5. Where's the confusion?

I can see where he's coming from though. The characters in Wolfenstein certainly looks comparable to those seen in RTCW.

On the tech side, Wolfenstein uses what Biessman refers to as "id tech 4.5." The DOOM engine that Raven heavily modified to create Quake IV has been built upon even further, and the Havok physics engine has also been integrated, allowing for the physics effects that we've now come to expect from shooters

id tech 4.5 it is

Hey, keep cool, gentlemen: when I was refering to the "same tech", I meant the same D3 base tech, not idTech 4 vs 5 :)

Edit: ok my message was badly turned and source of confusion, anyway, I was rather refering to the artistic side of the things, not the technical aspect.

Return of the 3D glasses!

Anyway, they seem to work without a wire, which is quite an improvement from those old goggles my Geforce 256 (== model 1) used to have.
Also, did they point out what gfx-card should be used? Or is it two PC's connected to one big monitor?

revility@Posted: Sat Aug 02, 2008 5:55 am :
One thing I really like from all the interviews is how open id is talking this year. They aren't denying or really defending universaly agreed faults of previous titles, and they did speak about how some games didn't do as well as they should have. I really wish more developers were like this.

The small bits of doom4 info are really great. It sounds like they are making a sequal with what the doom spirit really is, and not what people remember it being. Nice to see they already squashed the game not being m rated rumor.

Just no Doom 2 movie ok?

I would guess it's polarized glass and 2 monitor inputs on the thing, that's how the best 3d-displays (that require glasses) work.

According to the guy in the video it's a special monitor that runs at 120hz.

I've done a bit of searching to try and dig up some more info on this. It appears to be a special HDTV and the tech is called dualview...

Thank you :) My point exactly.
They're downgrading the D3 Engine because it's too specialized for dark, moody games. Graphically Prey worked great with this and, to a lesser extent, Quake4.
ETQW already was a major graphical step back with characters looking like they were "pasted in" (to paraphrase John Carmack from the Doom3 announcement a few years back), now Wolfenstein is giving us even less to be excited about, graphically. Nevermind it being about two years older when it releases.

iceheart@Posted: Sat Aug 02, 2008 2:01 pm :
Ah, yes, I read around a little, and it's just shutter glasses, a shame, really. Means any computer could do the same with a bit of programming and any 3d glasses made in the past 10-15 years. I really thought they had made something new and awesome :?.

Thanks to the board upgrade a while back it's possible to put people on an ignore list. I don't have the luxury as an moderator to use it but all you have to do is view the profile of the person you'd like to ignore and click "add as foe".

Quote:
What are my Friends and Foes lists?
You can use these lists to organise other members of the board. Members added to your friends list will be listed within your User Control Panel for quick access to see their online status and to send them private messages. Subject to template support, posts from these users may also be highlighted. If you add a user to your foes list, any posts they make will be hidden by default.

Thankfuly, D3W owner and moderators have a policy of only banning people when they're really obnoxious, when it's clear they do not want to contribute anything to the overall discussion, and when it's clear they don't want to change their ways.

I'd say making posts like that (plus the rest of the discussion) accomplishes all three things. Please stop. You can always leave, if that's what bothers you. Demanding enough attention to elicit a ban won't accomplish anything.
