this is interesting in that its told by the various people that actually developed the web as we know it today.

ahhh, i have fond memories of being on the net in 1993. there was very little to see back then. i remember that finding a nude picture of a woman was a big big deal, and it took a lot of searching. :P this was before the porn industry even got started on the web.

web sites looked like a 6 year old designed them back then...

Web? Porn was all over USENET by '93 in UUEncoded txt. Being a young hormonal teen, I can remember the process of combining multi-part UUEnc'd messages just to create one (usually crappy) photo. Oh, those were the days.

LOL

I do remember using some source from a Usenet newsgroup back then and my teacher told he she'd fail me if I didn't find a hard copy of that source somewhere because there was no way (for her) to verify its authenticity. Thankfully, I was able to find the same argument in print fairly easily and just used that as my source instead.

i'm thinking of early browser surfing in the astronomy computer lab at the university of wisconsin when i was an undergrad in 1993 . i remember there was some rudimentary searching tools like the Gopher and Veronica, but they sucked for finding nude pictures of woman.

either that or i just didn't know how to work the system back then. it was all new to me. :)

One of the people that guru'ed me in computer work was part of a group of culprits that originally swamped the internet with porn (not Don personally...). Holy crap, they have had the same shitty website online for the past decade.... http://www.donmclennan.com/

They influenced me a lot in my design work

I did'nt start getting on the web until about 95' I think, I used to go to my fathers house to use it because at that time, in my area, only rich people could afford it. I remember spending a lot of time at Doomgate back then.

I remember back around that time I found a Doom wad with porn pictures for wall textures, I used deutex and extracted them out. Those were very dark times back then, the few porn sites I could find did'nt even have thumbnails, no thumbnails for god's sakes!!!

It appears "porn" has been the true driving force which has turned the web into what it is. At least that's what I gather from the posts here.

I went online '96 and never went back.

Absolutely - I never could get the video stores and mail orders to deliver me real time stock quotes.

CrimsonHead@Posted: Thu Jul 03, 2008 10:50 am :
Hell yeah, back in the day if you went mail order there was always the chance your mom or your girlfriend would intercept it.

Later on in life, if you'd go to the video store there was always that one hot girl who would give you that look like you were some kind of sick weirdo, or worse if your wife or girlfriend was with you they'd give that little smile or wink, that was just as equally emberassing.

Porn shops are even worse, I've never been to one without my wife and that would be problematic in itself, there would always be some kind of butch dyke there to hit on her, or worse than that sometimes another husband and wife couple who think you are there looking to hook up for some kind of orgy shit. Some people may see that as a golden opportunity but to me it's the difference between fantasy and reality, I would never act out the video games I play in real life either.

My first exposure was with a 900 baud modem going on a server in Ohio to upload an animation file I made using a program called GRASP. It took around an hour to upload this 1 meg file and on top of that I got a phone bill for $36.00 because it was a -long distance call- The server was done with ansii code to give it an incredible 16? color vibrance that was just stunning!<---sarcasm
Needless to say I didn't do that again!
