Hey mang, great importer/exporter, we use it all the time for work on OverDose. The trouble is that while the exporter works fine (We have tested it ingame, no issues), the IMPORTER seems to create nasty triangles in places they, well, shouldn't. This means that when we come to export the mesh to .md5mesh, so that the smoothing is correct, and later re-import it again, the mesh displays badly in both the editor and in-game. Having tested this in various ways, we came to the conclusion that the exporter is doing its job perfectly well, the importer however, isn't.

The reason this is an issue, is because in order to get correct .md5mesh smoothing for our weapon models, we usually export it first to .md5mesh, then re-import it, THEN render to texture for the normals, so that we get the correct, final, ingame smoothing. However these are the results we end up with for a few select models:

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3374 ... mapqa1.jpg

Now the problem itself is very random. It always happens the same way on each mesh, and no polyflow tweaks/changes seem to help. But it can happen anytime, on anything, and for no reason at all.

I've attached the WORKING .md5mesh that I just this second tested ingame with and it contains no smoothing errors, however on importing the mesh again, it contains the errors, which leads me to believe its an importer issue.

Just so you know our team is using 3ds Max 2008 and this happens on all our machines.

Thank you for the time and I hope somebody, anybody, can offer us advice or a solution/fix.

Thanks for your nice problem description. I felt compelled to look into it right away. :)
If I import this md5mesh and export it again, the exact same mesh comes out, with the same number of vertices and triangles. But I confirm that there is this smoothing issue as seen in your screenshot. It must be because of 3dsmax's automatic smoothing applied to the mesh after import. I was able to correct that little smoothing glitch by applying one smoothgroup for the whole mesh.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah we managed to figure it out yesterday that this was all we needed to do. Saved us a lot of head aches.

Thanks for the help :)
