When id releases the source code to id tech 4, what exactly code will be there ? On their technologyl licensing page, id states that all those who buy an id tech 4 license get the full source code of doom3, quake4 and quake wars. Does that mean that when they gpl id tech 4 they will include the source code modifications to those games as well? Or the source code to those games was given to id's clients thru some sort of agreement with each of the games' respective owners (activision and probably relic, whoever owns them now) by which id pays royalties to them for providing their source code modification to their tech clients. Anyone wanna guess?

thanks

Highly unlikely.

As for past engines, only Doom3 source i would say...

Maybe I am confused by my delirious sick state. But Id owns the Quake4 and Quakewars IPs.

It's hard to say what the source will include when it is released though (unlikely any time soon however) For instance, when the Doom source code was released it wasn't the regular Dos version code that they released, but the linux version. it did however not include the Heretic, Hexen or Strife codebases though. (Though Heretic and Hexen was released later under a different license that has caused a lot of turmoil in the classic Doom community.)

Anyway. As for Id tech 4's release. I think it's unlikely but not impossible that the code will feature the additions done for Quake4 and ETQW. Remember that they changed the style of representation of their engines. Id Tech 4 does include those games, as well as the new Wolfenstein. So when they decide to release the engine. It's possible they will release it to cover all the titles they did themselves, using it.

Although they own the Q4 & ET:QW IPs, if they release the source code one day, I think they'll "only" provide the Doom 3 code, due to the fact that there's some library issues (for instance the Q4 lipsync system, the bink library for ET:QW), etc...).

So to me, they'll rather release the "Doom 3" code instead of the "idTech4" one.

Was watching the Keynote from QCon just now. Carmack said that the source would probably come out next year.

Well, the case with the original doom source code was because they (id) had used a propietary sound library in the dos doom.exe, so they couldnt release that. Heretic, Hexen and Strife werent done by id, and weren't id software's original IP, but Raven's in heretic and hexen case, and Rogue in Strife case. (btw, anyone know who owns the rights to Strife now, it was the best game to use the original doom engine).

In id tech 4's case, id owns the quake 4 and quake wars IP, although probably not the rights to the source code modifications to those games. I dont know how these things work, with IPs and source code, anyone know? For example, since thru a license id is able to give out full source code to quake4 and quake wars, it that possible through some sort of arrangement with Activision and/or Ritual? I assume it must be.

Kristus@Posted: Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:21 pm :
Actually, Heretic and Hexen was both commissioned work by Id (John Romero to be more exact), based on a design by Romero.

Strife was also done for Id (overseen by Romero), at least according to Wikipedia and the book Masters of Doom.

But yes, they don't own the trademarks for either of those games. Well, at least not Strife. Heretic and Hexen are listed as Id games on their website. As is Hexen 2, though not Heretic 2.

aardwolf@Posted: Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:13 pm :
Hmm, im not sure about heretic/hexen, but Strife wasnt done for id, id wasnt invovled at all actually. It was developed by Rogue, and published by velocity, both of which are now extinct. Anyways, back on topic, it'd be cool if megatexture code would be included in the eventual id tech 4 gpl release.

The Happy Friar@Posted: Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:37 pm :
it's built in to D3 so the basic code would be in the GPL.
