Hi, for the past two months I have been working on a movie mod and before I go any further I would like to know what the limitations are involving legal issues. I have noticed the term "Foxed" on a number of websites but I am very unsure about my constraints. I would like to keep the name of the movie under wraps as if something does happen with it, it will be a secret project that will only be distributed to few people. Thank you...

As long as you don't make it public but only exchange it with your friends at home - no legal issues could manifest since the copyright holder will never know about it.

If you plan a more public release, then contact the copyright holder and ask for permission or accept the 99% likelihood that your mod will get shut down and you'll sign a letter saying you wont do it again.

Or change places, names and title...

Those mods arent getting "Foxxed", they just die, because most modders dunno how to rig. As for legal part, phuck it who cares, they most likely arent going to hunt you down unless you send them an email or it generates a lot of interest on TV lol.

Just secretly not-base it off of a movie. For example, instead of calling the mod "Alien", or "Predator", name it... Playlien the Vegetarian. Instead of the evil, black as coal aliens, make them pink, and put emphasis on homosexuality. That way, nobody will ever want to make a copyright claim against you.

That, or you could just make a total conversion mod based off of original ideas while using inspiration from movies.

Or, you could cheat the system by going through time and space and actually filming the movie yourself in your evil twin body.

[Edit: Noted a typo. I also added "Edit:" because everyone else does it, and I want to fit in and be sooper kool like every other Forum Frequent-er Human]
