often job postings will have stuff like "minimum of 3 shipped AAA titles" as part of the required experience, but sounds like they would at least take a look at a really good mapper from the mod community and hire level scripter right from the mod community...

you're near madison, aren't you? Apply for that scripting job: you're DAMN GOOD at that! :D

I would like to be the "Level Scripter", but I cannot move from here until I'm at university.

actually, they have a "controller" job open. i'm really interested in that. you kind of run all the administration stuff for the company and get your hands into a bunch of different areas. that job would fit my real world experience very well.

i also met HumanHead's version of id Software's "mom" a few weeks ago. she's really nice. so at least i have a connection. maybe its fate!

now i just need to convince my wife that moving would be a good thing for our family. its only 3 hrs away, what's the big deal, right?

Don't bother applying unless you're American, even if you've got industry experience and AAA titles shipped. With their economy tanking American gaming firms don't seem to be interested in anyone but their own.

The Happy Friar@Posted: Sat Sep 27, 2008 2:35 pm :
wow! She gave birth to newborns AND a 3 year old AND a 6 year old! Holy Cow! :D:D:D

I don't think any woman would want to move much after that catastrophe. But hey, if it pays more, and it's only a couple hours away, I'd do it... but that's only because I don't like my place of residence.

Are there any us game companies that are able and have the will to sponsor potential workers from outside the USA? How is the situation in game companies in Europe for example?

As a swede that works in game development we have quite a bit of forigners @ the studio. Then again, it's really much much easier to set up a work permit for a non-swede than it is for a non-american to get a work visa. I lived in the US for 10 years and game companies there have a much larger pool of people to pick from domestically rather than bring people in from overseas and deal with the visa issues. Unless one has a lot of experiences or something totally unique to offer it's a better bet to look at companies where you live.
