I've just found out that guys from Monolith actually interact with the fan community.

I've read this in this thread:

I wish id guys could do the same. :(

id guys have been here rarely.

but they don't run their own forums, which I think is a great idea.

(To avoid any misunderstanding) You're saying that it's better for them to run their own forums or not to run their own forums at all? ^^

This place may have become too bureaucratic for id to regular.
Plus the fact it was established to rip apart the alpha leak, only for those very pirates to turn around and condemn anyone else for doing the same. 8)

Very nice post, thank you very much, great work!

The site was established before the alpha leak and no one here has ever turned around. And id software never had any complaints about D3W being too bureaucratic, at least not when talking to me.

Agreed.

I guess if they hadn't fired Romero, he would have introduced something like this. He was apparently always big on communicating with the playerbase.

Wasn't that what syncError was hired to do? Or at least, part of his Role. But maybe that was more player oriented than modder. Or perhaps I should say whiner oriented by the posts on the ESReality forums he has to deal with.

Better for then to NOT run their own forums. Look at all game company forums: when there are lots of complaints things get "filtered". Only to company forums I haven't seen this are the GSC/Stalker forums (mod's lock/move post because they're not relevant to the topic of the dub-forum) & splash damage (same as GSC). Valve, Epic & others all filter their forums to deter lots of "bad press" via forum posts.

while logical, id has said doom 3 was a mistake in the way they did it too! (TH: flashlight was a mistake, lots of darkness a mistake, monster closets a mistake, etc).

I don't really understand what it is people who want Id to be involved wants from them. I much rather see them working on new games than waste time with retarded questions from people too lazy to google.

But I'm one of those retards that likes to figure out things on my own. Detective work so to speak. ;)

I've only found the need to e-mail id once, and even then they didn't have an answer for me really. (encountered a bug in a map I made, and to this day I still don't know what is causing it. But it's likely a rouge entity or brush)

I like Splash damage's forums though. But it's not because it's splash damage's forums. Though you can occasionally see posts by the staff. But they don't really add anything that anyone else can't. Just that the logo in their profile gives their words a slight more weight.

Was browsing the 3d Realms forums a bit when Prey was released and witnessed the bullshit that went on there. Didn't notice any censoring but I saw G Broussard defending the stupid design decisions they went with in the game. That's the best cases of community involvement I've seen, and they really don't give or take anything from the experience.

Sure, it might be nice to have John Carmack browse the forums and explain every little detail, but he really do have more important things to do.

simulation@Posted: Tue Oct 28, 2008 1:16 pm :
Timothee 'TTimo' Besset at id used to run mailing lists for D3 and Q4 modders. You could post to the mailing list and your question would be broadcast to the other members and the id guys. When those titles were still "new" this was a good resource and Brian and TTimo used to respond to questions. That has sort of died off now; everyone has moved on and the id staff don't have the time to spare I guess.

It's funny you should bring up this topic as I was chatting to John Carmack on Sunday. We spoke for hours over a fine bottle of wine by the fire. I brought up this very subject but he had to catch a plane at 7pm. Luckily the clocks went back this week so the time was actually 6pm...How we laughed :D

I don't remember any stupid design decisions in that game. Best SP I've played in years before & after!

The most desperate and glaring flaw was how you can't die. Ever. The second being that you're actually rewarded for dying. (you can stock up on health and spirit power)

I actually liked that. It kept me "in game" rather than making me switch back to some abitrary point I'd saved at prior to dying.

I agree with Friar: best SP for a long time, and certainly the most fun to be had with an idTech4 SP title.
