A person on a mod team working with Source/HL2 told me today that it doesn't support Normalmaps. Is this correct?

Jack Rammsdell@Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 4:35 am :
He lied.

Self-Shadowed Normal Mapping and specular were added. The engine updates will be applied when the l4d sdk hits. The source sdk will update around the same time with any enhancesments from l4d. The current guess is in the next 6 months after the first l4d Downloadable content drops.

I think hl2 started off with supporting just bump maps and some other wierd thing (?light map?) Then came the HDR lighting. Now theres specular and normal mapping. I still think it looks generally flat.

I found this: http://www2.ati.com/developer/gdc/D3DTu ... hading.pdf
and this Half life2 screenshot suggests that they have normalmaps:

I haven't touched source since the release of HL2, but back then it only supported normal maps shaded by the "world light" or some weird stuff like that, not shaded by the lights in the map.

Kristus@Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 11:14 am :
Aha, same deal as with it's shadows then.

The Happy Friar@Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:31 pm :
don't the engine updates only apply to people why buy the new content? IE the EP2 engine updates only apply to people who buy EP2, if you have HL2/EP1 you don't get them?

I googled normalmaps in source and this was one of the first things I saw, I guess this was an addition someone wrote after reading it more through again. But I'm sure if a mod team wanted normalmaps, it wouldn't be so hard to add, if it hasn't already been put into the official sdk/updates.

pbmax@Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:57 pm :
The original hl2 game had normal maps, but only on a few surfaces. I'm 90% sure of this. I clearly remember walking thru a corrugated culvert sewer pipe with my flashlight that had normal maps, for example.

revility@Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 6:47 pm :
The self shadowing normal maps from left 4 dead will be in the left 4 dead sdk, and then the next source engine update which I believes allow it to work on all games. This was how the HDR lighting was done and the orange box engine upgrades.

Also here is a document on it. I didn't read it, but this should contain the info on the differences between standard normal maps and self shadows and how it works:

I've been digging around the steam cache files recently, and Hl 2 and ep1 run on a seperate engine compared to Ep2, TF2 and Portal. Whether both will be updated is hard to tell.

Valve has stated that eventually (the community assumption is after the release of Ep3) HL2 & Ep1 will both be updated to the latest Source engine. Whether that will be The Orange Box engine (Ep2, Portal, TF2, L4D) or an even newer engine (if Ep3 will use a newer engine, that) no one knows. For comfirmation, check the HL2 Steam forums as there are some threads about this.

I for one can't wait to play HL2 again with dynamic shadow-maps and HDR with dynamic tone-mapping, along with possible higher res assets.

valve says a lot. doesn't mean it's true or will ever happen.
