Broken Glass Studios is proud to announce the first public beta release of The Dark Mod, a medieval steampunk stealth game inspired by the Thief series.

The Dark Mod team started work on the project in September of 2004. Their goal was to take id Software's Doom 3 (id Tech 4) engine and completely transform the sci-fi / horror shooter into a medieval, steampunk, stealth experience.

With the release of The Dark Mod: Beta 1.00, we are offering the modding community a powerful, easy-to-use editing suite for creating stealth missions. All the assets and resources necessary to build playable missions are included, plus a customized editor called DarkRadiant. A branch of GTKRadiant, DarkRadiant has been designed specifically to cater to the needs of Dark Mod mapping.

In addition to the editing tools, the release also includes four playable missions (including a Training Mission) to help demonstrate the full potential of the mapping kit.

The Dark Mod is in a beta release stage at this time, which means that some minor bugs and incomplete features are to be expected.

To see screenshots, or to download The Dark Mod, please visit http://www.thedarkmod.com/ . Or visit our forums at http://www.modetwo.net/darkmod/ .

We hope you enjoy it! :)

The updater is needed to keep the mod up to date, since we plan for regular updates. We'll be providing a torrent over the next few days for people that don't want to use it for the initial download for whatever reason.

Yes. The mod is just a beta right now, so there are still several minor bugs and incomplete features. We'll probably be putting out updates every month or two for the first year. The first update will include several new characters that weren't quite ready for this release.

We designed the mod as a way to make 'Thief' inspired fan missions. It's a total conversion of the Doom 3 engine. Now, I'm not sure what you mean by making a 'game' from it. It already is a game...in the style of the Thief series, we just haven't created a campaign with a storyline. We provided some missions at the time of release, and are continuing to release new missions as they are completed. If you are talking about taking our work and building a completely different game on top of it...then you would be talking about a 'mod of a mod'. The focus was on creating a 'toolset' full of usable assets, and our customized version of GTK radiant, "Dark Radiant". As with anything, coding/scripting can be used but is not an absolute necessity.

comparing downloading an illegal game because you don't want to go spend the $50/60 in store is completely different vs downloading a free mod for people to play. :)

Why not just put a "main" download in filefront/planet/moddb.com/etc. & then have people use the updater to make sure it's up to date? Would give your hosts a big break & you could post a new main download every time you reach X mb in new content.

intel 9550
ATI 4890 OC edition (last drivers)
4 gb ram dual channel

i hope not a problem with ati card XD

edit:

i have download the map on dark mod official site:

The chalice of Kings --> not work
The Crown of penitence -> it's ok, no problem
The Outpost -----> max 4 fps with my 4890 and quad core 9550 ;_;

question: but how is structured the mod? i don't understand, after 1.4 gb , for play a mission necessary other downloads? no storyline?

The Happy Friar@Posted: Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:56 pm :
I have an ATI card & it works fine.

Tonight I'll check & see if I havething "fancy" done, but I think it's all in my doom3/darkmod folder & tdm_update says everything's set.

Is there a problem if I put the mod-as-is in a .zip file & upload to fileplanet/planetdoom? Includ tdm_update with it oo.

You guys have done a great job here. I'm not usually big on stealthy games but it's quite fun going through the training mission with the goal of knocking out all the guards and putting them in a dog pile. :)

Ivan_the_B@Posted: Tue Oct 20, 2009 2:13 pm :
You really did a great job!
Since I'm not a fan of Thief, I just watched my brother playing it. He always liked Thief(s) a lot.
I have to say that everything worked great, except for:
- a couple of crashes during the tutorial mission. He had to restart it from the beginning to avoid the problem.
- the lockpick system, which he didn't like very much... may be because it took a while to understand it :)
- sword: he used to use the sword in the old thiefs (sometimes), but here he gave up after few tries.

We also found the menu a bit confusing, especially the new mission screen.

Everything else was very well done. :)

fileplanet downloadS. 4 part's, part 4 isn't done uploading yet but I'll link the first three & you can eigther wait for me to post the link or use the tdm update program to get the last couple hundred meg's.

This is similar to Steam's "preload" idea: you get the main files then run the updater to everything from then on.

it's nice to have a torrent, but a mod this epic should have a zip file uploaded and mirrored to many places. does the idgames archive have doom3 mods? I'd look into that.

I was very paranoid when I ran your updater, being a windows executable. scarry, scarry stuff. you should release the source for that, too. did you write it from scratch or use some static libraries?
