With a budget of only $500 and a couple of years work this guy has made a pretty damn cool AvP fan movie. No prizes for spotting the parts where he cut costs. ;)

pbmax@Posted: Tue May 18, 2010 6:03 pm :
he gave no credit to id software in the closing credits. lame!

TelMarine@Posted: Tue May 18, 2010 7:50 pm :
haha, and no one in the comments seemed to notice.

I'm just wondering, how do you know doom 3 was used? I'd say doom 3 right off the bat too, but blender has all the features doom 3 does, so does dark places (quake 1) & sylphis 3d.

EDIT: From what people have told me, after effects can do virtual sets. Maya & Poser can too.

Doesn't seem obvious at this point, if you go halfway you'll find some known levels in there, e.g. there was a part of enpro halfway through (see screens below)
There are also Doom3 sound effects in there, and Half Life 2 sound effects as far I watched it. But a very cool effort in total, regardless of the lack of respect for naming sources.

Check it out:

yeah cool effort but the lack of credits is not cool at all.

I know the director of this fan movie. I collaborated at the beginning doing the music, but then had to give up cause of time problems. I still have the two tracks I did for the project:

http://www.neuro-lab.net/music/projects/avpr/avpr.html

Btw i saw some footages of the first production and it wasn't like this at the beginning, he mainly used maya for the animations and some effects, but didn't know about all those D3 textures.

Doom 3 textures and sound effects. Also the lighting looks exactly like ingame lighting in the parts using Doom 3 sets. I wasn't a hundred percent sure though until I saw a couple of particle effects that are definitely from Doom 3.

we know id uses stock assets, so that can be explained. We also can say that the Aliens franchise had "halls with holes and goo stuff" way before Doom 3 came out.

I'm not seeing anything in this that I wouldn't see in an AvP game.

Phobos@Posted: Wed May 19, 2010 6:19 am :
I thought it was fairly obvious. At first I thought it was so sub-par that they had taken a 2d shot of a doom3 setting and manipulated it (PS) to fit the camera, then I slapped myself for even thinking that and realized all they really did is animate the characters, and copy the camera position and movement for a doom 3 room. Probably post-effects (after effects, whatever they used) to splice the rendered character model into a pre recorded background.

It didn't appear to me that anything was actually imported "into" doom 3 and ran through the engine - and logically, this would've taken way more time and effort. Seeing how realistic the model was as well, I'm assuming that's way outside any id tech 4 texture budget and was obviously textured and rendered outside using ... whatever 3d program they used. Lighting effects can easily be mimicked to doom 3. Just make it dark, turn off any bleeding and jack the specular lol.

imho. to me that looks like what they did, and that's what I would've done had i been in the project. virtual sets are possible - but harder to do and it appeared to me like the model was separate from the setting in most doom3 rooms. The rest looked more like live action or motion capture or some insane zbrushing lol.

pbmax@Posted: Wed May 19, 2010 4:30 pm :
it looks like there's part of doom3's enpro level lifted straight from the game.

its not obvious to everyone else?

Douglas Quaid@Posted: Wed May 19, 2010 5:03 pm :
An entertaining video and the acting wasn't that bad but I hate to see other people's work used when they're not given credit for. They could have atleast composed their own music. It seems like most of the assets were stolen in my opinion bar the actors and models.

The levels from Doom 3 are Alphalabs (Spider Bitch Boss), Deltalabs (Betruger hallway walk) Enpro (Maggots x 2) and Commoutside. Also at 10 minutes you can even see some hallways from kiltron's Trite Breeding Facility map. I just hope he gave permission :)

The Happy Friar@Posted: Wed May 19, 2010 5:10 pm :
I went looking in enpro & found two areas that I could identify:
http://img684.imageshack.us/i/clipboard03w.jpg/
&
http://img709.imageshack.us/i/clipboard06f.jpg/

The others I couldn't identify in the map. The 2nd image has a red light removed & is flipped horizontally vs the view you receive in the game.

If it wasn't for the Doom 3 stuff being mentioned, I would never have watched it, so I'm glad it's causing so much controversy. I'm indifferent to being credited on anything I wouldn't put on my resume anyway.

Kristus@Posted: Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:18 am :
The Doom 3 sets certainly added an interesting curiosity to the movie. But there's some silly stuff in the script that irked me.

1. The Sulaco is destroyed in Aliens 3.
2. I doubt anyone of Weyland's offspring is still in an leading position in the company some 200 or whatever years after his death. (Even if Lance Hendriksen playing Weyland in AvP1 doesn't make any sense either since he already played the human that was the base for Bishop in Aliens 3)
3. None of the Predator's blades melt from the acid. Not even the wristblade.

But since the story is only a vehicle for the action, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Kiltron@Posted: Fri Aug 13, 2010 11:09 pm :
DOOM 3 was definitely used. Starting at 10:01 and half of the fight is my Trite Breeding Facility level. It is of the center room where you encounter two Mancubus. No I didn't give permission but I also do not care at this point.
