Ok, I finally decided to dust off my old retail cd's and install D3 on my Win7 cpu. I had this sucker spinnin' like top 8 years ago on my old XP, mods and all. But I figured I'd probly run into a few hiccups tryin to get it going on Win7. The first problem I ran into was the OpenGL atioglxx.dll error. Which I kinda sorta fixed by putting an older .dll (v9.1) in the game directory... I still get a "Your OpenGL functionallity is limited" message when lauching but it starts up fine, intro/menus all look great. The game it's self, well...

I've been all over the net trying to figure this one out to avail.
I did manage to find an old post regarding a similar problem in quake 4, and the dude fixed it (something to do with the .cfg and "128 megabyte high quality") but the link to the fix is dead.

I've tried every atioglxx.dll version from 9.1 to 12.1 thinking that was it, but nothing above 9.1 will even launch the game.
I've also been through every possible Catalyst configuration and in game setting there is, still no luck.
I also tried messing with D3DOverrider, nope.

I rolled back my video drivers to 8.6 after having nothing but problems with newer drivers in games like Skyrim/Fallout 3/BIA/Metro 2033 which now, are all runnin' smooth and maxed out.
So I'm guessing it's either the drivers(which I probly won't update), atioglxx.dll version, or something in the cfg. I've tried a few cfg. tweaks and managed to get 1080x1920 workin, which just pisses me off even more because I'm so damn close...

...really need some input on this one.

thx.

try changing these in Doomconfig.cfg to match the below

seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_roundDown "0"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"

that should bump the quality quite a lot.

Hope it helps.

Also, along with the above, add this and see if it helps:

seta r_renderer arb2

You should consider compiling dhewm3 https://github.com/dhewm/dhewm3 to avoid issues with OpenGL and other DLL hell (although I didn't have any issues installing and running vanilla Doom 3 on Windows 7 64bit with Nvidia).

Dhewm3 is probably the fastest with AMD/ATI cards so its a good choice :) only downside is that mods are not supported right outta the box due to protocol changes.
In case you want to use a mod with it you most likely will have to recompile the game dll against dhewm3. The official expansion works though.
